Flora Graffiti

Well, I finally made it into the studio this past weekend and my Flora Graffiti piece is the result.

The art I typically create is very logical, structured and precise. I think this comes from my career as a software engineer. However, lately I've been inspired to stretch myself to learn a little more about how to create my favorite style of art - abstract graffiti.

In this piece, I started with a blank canvas (white cotton) and I painted an abstract nature scene. It's hard to tell from the picture but there is an assortment of abstract leaves and grasses within the piece. the flowers were added with paint, fabric markers, and water soluble wax pastels.

I love the final result and it was great fun to explore this style of art which is so different from my usual work!

I made it using mostly found fabrics (the background is my old t shirt)

there's also silk and beads and paint and perl cotton stitching.

I'm happy with the result and I hope you enjoy it as well!!!!

BASKING IN THE SUN

My challenge piece for August 1, the word FLORAL.
It has been quite warm in CT this summer and when I saw this batik among my stash all I could see was the hot sun. But the hot sun combined with the abundant rain in the spring has made some pretty substantial gardens, this among them.

I am without internet service at home and will have to post my FLORAL when I get it fixed. Thanks for your patience! I love what I see and hope to see all the rest soon.

Flora and Fauna

What's flora without  fauna?  I experimented with my Innova long arm's eCorder (couching) attachment and some ribbon, glittery thread and yarn to jazz up the flora in a slightly skewed sunset garden where flowers can be bigger than (painted) lions.

Wild Petals

The theme was "Flora". So many ideas, so little time. Each idea grander than the next. Then the reality of life, time, vacation, responsibilities, commitments, and so forth set in and the possibility of the grand and perfect art quilt evaporated. Nonetheless, the challenge is complete. This piece started with a favorite piece of hand-painted fabric from Ruth Anne Olson. The painted "Wild Petals" are like my often wild and scattered ideas.

FLORA -Summer Flower-" Anticipation"

Been living on a farm these last two months and been in awe of nature...every day waiting for one of my favorite flowers to burst open from seed to stalk to bloom and the anticipation was worth every second of the unbelieveable beauty of the Sunflowers viewed from our kitchen/warm morning rooms...

Dyed wax resist batik original sunflower, Batiks, Drunkard's Path Templates, Commercial cotton Backing, Cotton Batting, Cotton and Rayon threads, Coton Perle, Misty Fuse, Jacquard Luminere Paint and Stewart Gill Alchemy Textile Paint, Fossil leaves from Nature's Handmade Paper, Sulky Totally Stable, Heat Set Crystals and couched embellishments.

Machine Pieced, Machine Quilted, Thread painted and Hand Embroidered, Traditional Binding.

Biodiversity
In June I used some silk for break down printing. But I forgot that soda soaked silk don’t last for month! And the silk I used was there for month!! So the result was not what I expected. But exactly this piece was the perfect background for my Flora project. I printed over with acrylic paint some grasses and wildflowers then added leftover painted Lutradur and printed organza. The piece is entirely hand stiched I embroidered some Arnica flowers with silk whole. I’ll call it biodiversity in honour of the international year of biodiversity this year. Looking forward to the next theme!
